A GIVING JOURNEY ON A BUDGET

Start Here: Not Much to Give

Inspired by Yield Giving and The 10% Pledge, I pledge to give.

This site exists to document that giving. It’s a personal record – a reminder to stay engaged with the journeys of the charities and individuals I support. It should also serve as a source of inspiration for others who may not have much, but still want to make an impact through giving.

I grew up poor. As an adult I’ve come to recognise the combination of geographical and ethnic privilege, luck, and support that helped lift me out of that situation. But the effects of financial hardship don’t disappear easily. They leave a mark. Still I catch myself drawn to a lifestyle of poverty, almost like a comfort blanket. For me, that’s taken many forms over the years:

  • Uninhibited borrowing, reckless spending
  • Feelings of inadequacy and guilt
  • Swinging between financial stability and near-ruin

When you’ve grown up with less, money can feel like a lifeline, a way to catch up with a world that always seemed ahead of you. But I’ve learned that money alone doesn’t bring happiness, and material possessions don’t build self-worth.

That said, money can open doors, protect the vulnerable, and level the playing field. That’s what I hope my giving will contribute to.

I’m especially passionate about animal rights, social mobility, and inequality in all forms. Through this blog, I want to leave behind a trace – a quiet acknowledgment that I tried to make things better in the ways I could.

I don’t have much, but I’ll give what I can to the causes I believe in, and to the places where I feel my contribution can make a real difference, even in a small way. Because no matter how little you give, it will make an impact.
