During a particularly cold spell in Manchester at the start of the year, I read the news that two homeless men, whose rooms were paid for by TwoBrews Homeless Charity, were turned away purely on the basis of appearing to be homeless.
That stark display of corporate snobbery deeply troubled me. It was a painful reminder of how inequality is often reinforced by institutions more concerned with appearances than with humanity. When image takes priority over people, the most vulnerable are the first to pay the price.
Around same time, I found myself in a position of good fortune in my career which – most importantly – allows me a bit more capacity to give.
I am looking forward to a New Year of focussed, intentional and impactful giving – an effort, however small, to help counterbalance the inequalities that moments like this laid bare.
